Magic Scissors on the Loose

(OVIEDO, FL,  September 2006) “Look! It‚s a butterfly garden! There go five leaping frogs. Yep! Grandma has been sighted again in airports, schools and stages from Los Angeles to New York, and from Denver to Orlando. Her flowered hat and cane, with ribbons flying, is headed off to tell stories in the schools or do concerts at Book Festivals. As a Professional Storyteller and Author she astonishes the audience with her stories and Magic Scissors.

Grandma’s Magic Scissors is an amazing new book all about paper cutting and its use in Storytelling. Nationally recognized at Book Expo of America, in Washington D.C., the book was a Top Ten Finalist noted by Forward Magazine and by the Independent Publishers of America as an Honorable Mention of over 1500 entries. This unique and imaginative book has over 100 detailed instructions and patterns, along with some stories and a multitude of different applications.

“Grandma's here! Grandma's here!” Shout the children, and they run to get a hug. You hear , “Are you ready for a story?,”  “Yes!!” Comes the ear splitting answer. Then Grandma begins, “Once upon a time ...” and the childrens faces are eager with anticipation as Grandma begins to weave her story. Then " It's Magic Scissor Time! " and from the pocket of her flowing apron she takes out the Magic Scissors‚ and a simple piece of folded paper and begins to cut. All eyes are on her hands, and you could almost hear the paper drop as the image takes shape. Then there are “Oohs and Aahs,” from the delighted audience when the images are unfolded. “If you like to hear a story, read a book. shout hurray!” Hurrah!! is their echo."

"Retired now means getting new tires to travel across this great country to share fairy tales, folk lore, legends, historical and pioneer vignettes, and my own stories with my magic scissors.  As part of StoryMasters I also work with my daughter as tandem tellers‚. We are performing artists for Literacy in Schools helping children to develop a greater desire to read. For four years we volunteered with the Screen Actor’s Guild Foundation reading stories." says Linda. "Today we perform concerts and workshops all over the United States."

“I encourage the joy of exciting their eager minds to good literature, to use their creativity and imagination, as we bring adventure and fantasy to life,” says Linda, giggling in her lilting unforgettable way. “The children develop better reading skills as we lift their use of vocabulary, recall and sequencing. They check out more books from the library and they want to read.  They eagerly join me in theatre of the mind‚ as I travel with stories and books and of course my magic scissors.  As 'Grandma', I can‚t even begin to count the concerts given over the forty years or the thousands of children whose lives have been touched with good literature, poetry, role playing, puppets and the joy of storytelling.

Reading is the magical key that unlocks mystery, adventure and fantasy. I love what I do, and I do what I love,” says Grandma. “I worked beside my husband with a touring children‚s theatre for 25 years, Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales, taking legends, folklore, poetry and fun out into the elementary and rural schools of the Appalachians in the 70‚s and 80‚s. We touched the lives of over 60,000 children a year, bringing laughter and imagination to life. Later we served at the Museum of Church History and Art as historical playwrights in Salt Lake City, Utah.”
